5G Has Arrived — But Not Everywhere Equally
As of mid-2026, both Jio and Airtel have 5G coverage across the top 100 cities in India, and Vi (Vodafone Idea) has begun its rollout in select metros. But coverage maps and real-world experience are two very different things. In parts of Mumbai and Delhi, you will genuinely hit 300-500 Mbps speeds. In a Tier 2 city, your 5G phone might spend most of its time on 4G.
Which Cities Have the Best 5G Right Now?
Jio and Airtel have the widest coverage. For Jio, the strongest 5G experience is currently in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata. Airtel’s 5G — which uses the mmWave spectrum in select spots — is particularly fast in airport terminals, malls, and stadiums in Mumbai and Delhi.

Tier 2 cities like Jaipur, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, and Surat have patchy 5G coverage — strong near city centres, weak in outer areas. If you live in a Tier 3 town, assume 4G for now.
Which Phones Support 5G in India?
Any phone sold in India after late 2022 that mentions 5G likely supports the NSA (Non-Standalone) 5G bands used by Jio and Airtel. However, the specific bands matter. Both operators use Band 78 (Sub-6GHz) for wide coverage and have tested mmWave in limited spots. Phones like the OnePlus Nord 4, Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G, Samsung Galaxy A55, and iPhone 15 onwards all support the required bands.
If you are using an older phone, check your model’s spec sheet for “n78” band support. If it’s not listed, you won’t get 5G regardless of what the box says.
Real-World Speeds: What to Expect
In a strong 5G zone in Delhi or Mumbai, you can realistically expect 150-500 Mbps download speeds — roughly 10-15x faster than typical 4G. Upload speeds are around 30-80 Mbps. Latency drops to under 15ms, which makes a real difference for online gaming and video calls. However, during peak hours (6pm-11pm), congestion can bring 5G speeds close to 4G levels in crowded areas.
Is It Worth Upgrading to 5G?
For most Indians, the honest answer in 2026 is: it depends on what you do. If you stream HD video, attend video calls, game online, or work from your phone regularly — yes, 5G makes a noticeable difference. If you mostly use your phone for WhatsApp, social media, and calls, your 4G experience is already fine.
The financial case for upgrading is stronger now that 5G phones are available under ₹15,000. The Redmi 14C 5G and Poco M6 5G are entry-level options. If you are already planning to replace your phone, choose 5G. If your current phone works fine, wait another year.
Jio vs Airtel 5G: Which Is Better?
Jio True 5G uses a standalone (SA) architecture in many areas, which means lower latency and more consistent speeds. Airtel 5G Plus uses NSA architecture but combines it with its superior 4G backhaul, giving very stable performance even at the edge of coverage. Independent speed tests in 2026 show Jio leading in raw peak speeds while Airtel leads in consistency. If you are in a metro, either is good. If you travel frequently across cities, Jio’s wider rollout gives it an edge.
