When Chandrayaan-3 landed near the lunar south pole in August 2023, India became only the fourth country in history to land on the moon — and the first to reach the south pole. That mission cost ₹615 crore, less than the budget of many Hollywood films. It announced something that the world had not fully registered: India can do space cheap, and India can do space well.

Two years later, that moment has catalysed a genuine industry. India’s space economy, estimated at around ₹16,000 crore in 2023, is projected to cross ₹25,000 crore by 2028.

IN-SPACe and the Opening of Indian Space to Private Firms

For decades, ISRO held a monopoly on Indian space activity. In 2020, the government created IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre) to open the sector to private players. The results have been fast. Over 200 space startups now operate in India. Companies like Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, Pixxel, Dhruva Space, and GalaxEye are building rockets, satellites, and ground systems that were unimaginable five years ago.

Skyroot and Agnikul: India’s Private Rocket Startups

Skyroot Aerospace launched Vikram-S in November 2022 — India’s first privately built rocket to reach space. Their Vikram series is designed specifically for small satellite launches, a market growing globally as every industry from agriculture to logistics needs its own satellite constellation. Agnikul Cosmos followed with SoraNaut, the world’s first rocket with a fully 3D-printed engine, launched from their own launchpad in Sriharikota. These are not science projects. They are commercial ventures with international customers.

Pixxel: The Earth Observation Company Going Global

Pixxel has launched hyperspectral satellites that capture Earth imagery in hundreds of wavelengths — far more than traditional satellites. This data has commercial applications in precision agriculture, mining, oil and gas detection, and climate monitoring. Their customers include international government agencies and Fortune 500 companies.

What the Space Economy Means for Ordinary Indians

The benefits are more immediate than you might think. Satellite-based internet from ISRO’s proposed services and private players will bring connectivity to villages where laying fibre is impossible. Precision agriculture powered by satellite data is already helping farmers in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh optimise irrigation and predict crop disease. Disaster early warning systems are getting sharper. Navigation apps you use daily rely partly on India’s own NavIC satellite system.

The Jobs Being Created

The space sector is not just creating rocket scientists. It needs software engineers, data analysts, supply chain managers, manufacturing workers, and business development professionals. ISRO has opened its facilities as testing grounds for private firms, creating an ecosystem around its launch sites. Cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai are emerging as global space tech hubs.

The Road Ahead

India aims to capture 10% of the global space economy by 2030, up from about 2% today. Gaganyaan, India’s human spaceflight mission, is scheduled to send Indian astronauts to orbit. The Bharatiya Antariksh Station — India’s own space station — is in planning. The country that once outsourced satellite launches to foreign rockets is becoming the launch destination of choice for the world’s small satellite operators.
