EV Buying Guide for India 2026: Should You Switch to an Electric Vehicle?

India’s EV Moment Has Arrived

Electric vehicle sales in India crossed 1.5 million units in FY2026 — a 45% jump over the previous year. From two-wheelers to premium SUVs, the market now offers genuine alternatives to petrol vehicles across price points. But is now the right time to switch? And which EV suits Indian conditions?

The Running Cost Advantage

The economics of EVs are compelling. Charging an EV costs roughly ₹1.5-2 per kilometre on home charging, versus ₹6-8 per kilometre for petrol cars. For someone driving 1,500 km/month, this translates to savings of ₹6,000-9,000/month — meaning the EV premium often pays back in 3-4 years.

Real Range vs Claimed Range

ARAI-certified range figures are measured under ideal conditions. Indian driving conditions — summer heat, stop-and-go traffic, and AC usage — typically reduce range by 20-35%. A car claiming 400 km range realistically delivers 280-320 km in Indian conditions. For city commuting under 80 km/day, virtually any modern EV works fine. For highway use, range becomes a critical consideration.

Charging Infrastructure in 2026

India now has over 25,000 public charging stations, concentrated in metro cities. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune have reasonable coverage. Tier-2 and highway coverage is improving but remains patchy. If you live in an apartment without home charging, this is your biggest practical challenge — verify with your housing society before buying.

Best EVs at Different Price Points

Under ₹15 lakh: Tata Tiago EV (315 km range), MG Comet EV. ₹15-25 lakh: Tata Nexon EV, MG ZS EV, Mahindra BE 6. Above ₹25 lakh: Hyundai Ioniq 6, BYD Seal, Kia EV6. Two-wheelers: Ola S1 Pro, Ather 450X, TVS iQube for daily commuters.
